NEW! Positive Practice ~~ Novice & up (Levels 2-5)
Until someone invents a magic pill that will automatically allow you to play every piece perfectly, you will need to do the work yourself! I’ll share my 65+ years of practicing various instruments as we explore tried and true methods that you can apply to any song you want to learn. In the process, you’ll develop skills that can be applied to many other songs, you’ll build your repertoire, and you’ll be more confident when you perform for others. (DAD Tuning)
NEW! Variations on the Tune -- Intermediate / Advanced (Levels 3-5)
Are you tired of playing the same old tune the same old way? In this workshop we'll get creative, adding a countermelody and passing tones, using different chords or positions, trying different styles, changing keys and time signatures, and using the entire fretboard. We'll take our tab from the basic bare bones to a fancy version suitable for performance. (DAD Tuning, capo required)
NEW! Dulcimist's Guide to Guitar or Piano Chords -- Int and up (Levels 3-5)
You have a piece of piano or guitar sheet music that you really like, but how the heck do you play those wacky chords on your dulcimer, such as Cm7(add11), or A9sus, or Gm6/9/B ? You can't. But, in this "hands-on" session, working from lead sheets and chord charts in various keys, you'll learn how to simplify guitar chords, AND how to transpose them into dulcimer-friendly keys. No knowledge of music theory required! Promise!! (All music in your packet will be in the public domain.) (DAD tuning.)
Babysteps to Fingerpicking -- Novice / Intermediate (Levels 2-3)
As a new player back in the early days of my dulcimer exploration, I started looking for other ways to play the instrument beyond the strumming methods I'd been learning. The answer was to put down the pick and start using my fingers. We'll practice a few different methods of fingerpicking, and apply these techniques to songs you already know. (DAD tuning.)
The Expressive Dulcimer -- Intermediate / Advanced (Levels 3-4-5)
This workshop will give you a fresh approach that will bring your playing to a new level. We'll discuss the various mechanics that will improve your right- and left-hand technique, but we'll also explore how to express the feelings that the music brings to you while you play. People will exclaim, "Wow! I never knew a dulcimer could sound like that!" (DAD tuning; 1+ fret needed; capo required.)
Tailless Tunes - Traditional Manx Music of the Isle of Man - Intermediate (Level 4-5)
We'll go on a musical journey to the Isle of Man, a tiny island located in the Irish Sea, where we'll explore an untapped source of this beautiful Celtic music, including lively jigs and reels, soothing lullabies, and haunting ballads. I'll share many anecdotes related to these songs, gathered during my two visits to the Island. Please visit the "Manxellaneous" section of my website for more in-depth information about the Isle of Man. (1+ fret needed for some pieces; capo required; we will retune from DAD to GGD.)
Easy-Peasy Chords -- Novice (Levels 2-3)
Using the time-honored "Power Chord" system, you'll discover how to play almost any chord you'll ever need in several different keys. These chords will open all kinds of doors for you, giving you confidence and flexibility in any setting, including jams and singalongs. No retuning or capo required! (DAD tuning.)
Prelude from Bach's Cello Suite #1 -- Advanced (Level 5)
This iconic classical piece composed over 300 years ago has become well known today, thanks to cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Translating Bach's music to a 3-string diatonic folk instrument has its challenges, but for the advanced player, this will be a worthwhile endeavor. We'll take apart this abridged arrangement, section by section, and put it back together again. (DAD tuning; 1+ fret is needed, but I'll show you a work-around if you don't have one.)
Favorite Hymns -- Solos and Duets -- Novice to Advanced (Levels 2-5)
This is a repertoire-building workshop that will include several hymns, with each arranged on two levels -- "Easy" and "Fancy." Each hymn, which appears in Carol's latest book, Church of the Wildwood, can be played as a duet and/or a stand-alone solo. These arrangements are designed so that every member of your dulcimer group can play together. (DAD tuning, capo and 1+ fret required for some pieces)
Chord/Melody Style -- Intermediate to Advanced (Levels 3-5)
Are you looking for a solid and consistent fingering system that will help you overcome the challenges of playing both the melody and accompaniment on your dulcimer at the same time? If yes, this is the workshop for you! Learn how to make friends with all five of your fingers!
Professor Walker's Warmups -- Novice to Intermediate (Levels 2-3)
Warmups can do wonderful things to improve your playing, regardless of your level of experience. But if you've ever wondered what kind of warmups will give you the best result in the least amount of time, this is the workshop for you. You'll also learn how to create your own effective warmups.

Here's the nitty-gritty:
Each workshop is $15 (USD) and will run a total of 90 minutes -- 60-75 minutes of solid instruction, with plenty of time for questions and other interaction.
A minimum of 6 people would be appreciated. The maximum is 99, so no worries about getting locked out!
If your plans change and you must cancel your workshop, I'll happily offer a refund, but instead please allow me to credit your payment towards a future workshop of your choice.
The workshops available during the month of January are listed below. Please pick the one(s) you're interested in, and the date(s), and click the Paypal button(s) to arrange for payment. You'll quickly receive a personal "thank you" from me to confirm your registration. (Note -- if you are ordering more than one workshop, you can place each item in your cart and then check out with everything at one time -- one-stop shopping!)
If possible, please register at least 4-5 days ahead of time. You will receive your Zoom invitation and workshop PDFs approximately three days prior to the workshop. But I am happy to welcome last-minute registrants and will do my best to accommodate you with invitations and PDFs.
You do not need to have a Zoom account to join a meeting.
It's recommended that you join the workshop on your computer, laptop, or tablet. A smart phone will not be suitable for these sessions.
Sessions will not be recorded.
