Walker's Virtual Workshops

~~~~~~~~~~
Coming to a computer near you --
March 31 - April 5.
I'm baaaack -- and I'm excited to share some terrific new workshops with you, along with repeats of my most popular "oldies but goodies" workshops.
Sunday, April 3, will be a very special day, with four workshops devoted to music from the UK, including a special FREE presentation about the lost music of St. Kilda.  Also on that day I'll be teaching three workshops with some new songs from the Isle of Man, how to turn your dulcimer into "dulci-pipes,"
and I'll share some of my secrets about how I create an arrangement.
The complete list of these offerings is below.
Registration Open NOW!
SPECIAL PRESENTATION (FREE!)  April 3, 1pm Eastern Daylight
Title - The Lost Songs of St Kilda  (All Levels)
Subtitle - from St Kilda to an Edinburgh Care Home and back again
Description - After many years working with computers, Stuart McKenzie volunteered to help residents of old peoples homes in Edinburgh to use the Internet. In Silverlea Care Home he met Trevor Morrison who asked 'Can these things record music?' That was in 2006. He recorded Trevor playing tunes from St Kilda taught to him as a child, saving them from extinction. Ten years later the music became a best selling classical album along with new compositions inspired by the original tunes. These are now played by the Scottish Festival Orchestra conducted by Sir James Macmillan. Join us and hear the incredible story of how these haunting tunes were rescued.S  tuart will be joined by concert pianist and Oregon resident, Priscilla Weaver, who took the next step by transcribing Trevor's recordings so that all pianists could play them.  And Yours Truly will also join in to play a couple of the dulcimer arrangements that will appear in the new book.
There is no charge for this special presentation, but I've listed it as a part of my Spring 2022 Walker Workshops.  Please click here to sign up for this free workshop.
NEW!  Manxellaneous (Levels 3 and up)
Kicking off this Special Sunday UK event, I'll share some more Manx tunes with you, not previously taught in any workshop.  Some are in my two Manx books, Tailless Tunes and Tailless Tunes 2, but I'm also including a few new arrangements not yet published.
NEW!  The Dulci-Piper (Levels 3 and up)
Continuing our exciting journey to the UK, and especially the remote island of St. Kilda off the coast of Scotland, we'll play a number of songs in "dulci-pipe" tuning!  If you've never played in this unique tuning before, you're in for a real treat!  I'll share my new arrangements of traditional tunes from Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, and the Isle of Man.
NEW!  The Art of Arranging (Levels 3 and up)
And, completing our Special Sunday of UK tunes, I'll share the basic step-by-step process I use every time I write a new arrangement.  If you've ever wondered how a raw melody can become a fancy arrangement, this is the workshop you've been waiting for.  I wrote my first dulcimer arrangement for a workshop way back in 2006, published my first book in 2010, and have been going strong ever since!  I'll also spend a little time showing you the notation program I use, Finale.  It's considered the industry standard, and in my opinion, makes the best looking copy.  But you don't need anything that fancy to get started!  All you need is a melody and your dulcimer.  And a little time to yourself, uninterrupted -- it all starts with a "noodle."  NOTE:  This workshop is offered in two time slots -- same material, different days and times.
Workshop titles listed below are
alphabetized for your convenience.
Capo Capers & Alternate Tunings  (Levels 4-5)
If you're stuck in the DAD rut, this class will freshen up your repertoire with a rich variety of tunes that will add colorful diversity to your playing.  You'll also discover that your capo has magical powers!  We'll start off in DAD but will venture forth into the land of DAD, DAC, CAC, DF#A ("Chromatic" tuning), AAD, GGD, and more!
Copyright Information for Dulcimer Players (and anybody else...) (ALL levels)
It has long been my belief that dulcimer folks genuinely want to do the right thing when it comes to arranging and distributing tabs of copyright-protected songs, but that they honestly don't have any idea, or have been misinformed by other well-meaning folks about what they can or cannot do.  To that end, I decided it was time to run a workshop on this topic.   Ever the teacher, it is my goal to educate interested folks as to all the do's and don'ts related to copyright law.  Jot down your questions ahead of time, and I'll answer them one by one.
I also have some important NEW information to share with you since the last time I offered this workshop!
 Dulcimer à la Mode (Levels 4-5)
Curious about modes but afraid to ask?  This workshop is way more than just a boring theoretical explanation.  Instead, we'll sample seven songs, each one in a different mode, which will give you a taste of the distinct flavor of each mode.  Our diatonic fretboard makes it super easy to figure out!
Easy-Peasy Chords (Levels 2-3)
Using the time-honored "Power Chord" system, you'll discover how to play almost any chord you'll ever need in several different keys.  These chords will open all kinds of doors for you, giving you confidence and flexibility in any setting, including jams and singalongs.  No retuning or capo required!
Hey! Where's the Beat? - I've Got Rhythm and So Will YOU!  (ALL levels)
Understanding the relationship of the beat to the rhythm is the Key to the Universe!  You’ve just found a new piece of music that is nicely tabbed out, but you have no idea how it sounds, and there’s no one around who can play it for you.  Now what??!!  You’ll learn how to figure out the most difficult aspect of this dilemma:  how to read and play the rhythms accurately.  BONUS:  Many folks have told me they have no idea how to use a metronome.  I'll help you discover why this lowly tick-tock machine deserves a very special place in your musical toolbox.
NEW!  Keep Calm and Keep GOING! (ALL levels)
This workshop is brought to you by a Very Shy Performer.  Yes, dear friends, Yours Truly used to absolutely HATE getting up on a stage, but if I can do it, so can you!  Whether you want to sing and play at an open mic or just serenade the family dog, I'll share experiences from my long musical career that will help you have more confidence on any stage.  Don't like to sing?  You're a Nervous Nellie?  No problem -- all aspects of presenting your best performance will be covered.  I'll also ask for your own input (anonymously of course!) when it comes to stagefright -- together we'll conquer the world!
 NEWish!  Piedmont Fingerpicking  (Levels 4-5)
Guitarists have been using this fingerpicking method forever, but now mountain dulcimer players can do it too!  If you’re looking for a spiffy new challenge to add to your quiver of techniques, this is it.  We’ll work our way through some exercises to get your hands and brain in sync, and then we’ll apply it to all kinds of tunes!
NEW material has recently been added to this workshop!
Variations on the Tune (Levels 3-5)
Are you tired of playing the same old tune the same old way?  In this workshop we'll get creative, adding a countermelody and passing tones, using different chords or positions, trying different styles, changing keys and time signatures, and using the entire fretboard.  We'll take our tab from the basic bare bones to a fancy version suitable for performance.
Not sure what level you are?  Click here to see a listing of the five levels
as suggested  by the folks at QuaranTUNE
Keep scrolling...  Lots to cover here!  (Paypal Buttons are below.)
Here's the nitty-gritty:
Each workshop is $15 (USD) and will run a total of 90 minutes -- 60-75 minutes of solid instruction, with plenty of time for questions and other interaction.
A minimum of 6 people would be appreciated.  The maximum is 99, so no worries about getting locked out!
If your plans change and you must cancel your workshop, I'll happily offer a refund, but instead please allow me to credit your payment towards a future workshop of your choice.
Please pick the one(s) you're interested in, and the date(s), and click the Paypal button(s) to arrange for payment.  You'll quickly receive a personal "thank you" from me to confirm your registration.  (Note -- if you are ordering more than one workshop, you can place each item in your cart and then check out with everything at one time -- one-stop shopping!)
If possible, please register at least 4-5 days ahead of time.  You will receive your Zoom invitation and workshop PDFs approximately three days prior to the workshop.  But I am happy to welcome last-minute registrants and will do my best to accommodate you with invitations and PDFs.
You do not need to have a Zoom account to join a meeting.
It's recommended that you join the workshop on your computer, laptop, or tablet.  A smart phone will not be suitable for these sessions.
Sessions will not be recorded.
