Walker's Virtual Workshops

~~~~~~~~~~
Coming to a computer near you --
stay tuned for future workshop announcements!
I'm baaaack -- and I'm excited to share some terrific new workshops with you, along with repeats of my most popular "oldies but goodies" workshops.
Below is the list of the January offerings.  Check back for future events!
You can still sign up for the St. Kilda presentation -- see below:
Saturday, February 25 will be a very special day!
I'll be repeating the special St. Kilda program, presented by Stuart McKenzie (Edinburgh) and Priscilla Weaver (Oregon).
SPECIAL PRESENTATION (FREE!)  February 25, 1:00pm Eastern
Title - The Lost Songs of St Kilda  (All Levels)
Subtitle - from St Kilda to an Edinburgh Care Home and back again
Description - After many years working with computers, Stuart McKenzie volunteered to help residents of old peoples homes in Edinburgh to use the Internet. In Silverlea Care Home he met Trevor Morrison who asked 'Can these things record music?' That was in 2006. He recorded Trevor playing tunes from St Kilda taught to him as a child, saving them from extinction. Ten years later the music became a best selling classical album along with new compositions inspired by the original tunes. These are now played by the Scottish Festival Orchestra conducted by Sir James Macmillan. Join us and hear the incredible story of how these haunting tunes were rescued.S  tuart will be joined by concert pianist and Oregon resident, Priscilla Weaver, who took the next step by transcribing Trevor's recordings so that all pianists could play them.  And Yours Truly will also join in to play a couple of the dulcimer arrangements that will appear in the new book.
There is no charge for this special presentation, but I've listed it as a part of my 2023 Winter Walker Workshops.  Please click here to sign up for this free workshop.
NEW!  The Art of the Bass Dulcimer (Levels 2 and up on standard dulcimer)
Did you know that in a previous life, Carol Walker played stand-up bass?  Yes, she really did -- everything from old-time to blues to bluegrass.  Now she’s translating that experience to the bass dulcimer, and she will share those techniques with you.  This is a “general” course for anyone with a little experience playing dulcimer.  And if you don’t yet have a bass, you can still practice these techniques on your standard dulcimer.
This workshop made its debut in the November 2022 North Georgia online festival, and appears here in a 90-minute format which allows for more attention to the various techniques presented.
NEW!  Bass Dulcimer Music Theory (Levels 3 and up on standard dulcimer)
Good bass players are equally adept at reading tablature and playing by ear. Carol will share tips she learned as a stand-up bass player on how to figure out which notes to play when there’s no tablature available, and how and when to add “walking bass” notes.  You're welcome to join the workshop even if you don't yet have a bass -- the same techniques will work just fine on your standard dulcimer.
This is another workshop that was first presented in the November 2022 North Georgia online festival, and appears here in a 90-minute format which allows plenty of time to solidify the basic elements of music theory that every bass player should know.
Babysteps to Fingerpicking (Level 2 and up)
This newish “revised edition” of this most popular Walker Workshop is specifically geared for Level 2 players.  The left hand stuff is kept simple so that you'll be able to concentrate on the right hand techniques that will help you master this alternate style of playing.  Soon you’ll be applying this method to any song you would ever want to learn.  (Levels 2-5 will enjoy this workshop.) DAD tuning
Copyright Information for Dulcimer Players (and anybody else...) (ALL levels)
It has long been my belief that dulcimer folks genuinely want to do the right thing when it comes to arranging and distributing tabs of copyright-protected songs, but that they honestly don't have any idea, or have been misinformed by other well-meaning folks about what they can or cannot do.  To that end, I decided it was time to run a workshop on this topic.   Ever the teacher, it is my goal to educate interested folks as to all the do's and don'ts related to copyright law.  Jot down your questions ahead of time, and I'll answer them one by one.
I also have some important NEW information to share with you since the last time I offered this workshop!
Hey! Where's the Beat? - I've Got Rhythm and So Will YOU!  (ALL levels)
Understanding the relationship of the beat to the rhythm is the Key to the Universe!  You’ve just found a new piece of music that is nicely tabbed out, but you have no idea how it sounds, and there’s no one around who can play it for you.  Now what??!!  You’ll learn how to figure out the most difficult aspect of this dilemma:  how to read and play the rhythms accurately.  BONUS:  Many folks have told me they have no idea how to use a metronome.  I'll help you discover why this lowly tick-tock machine deserves a very special place in your musical toolbox.
NEW-ish!  Keep Calm and Keep GOING! (ALL levels)
This workshop is brought to you by a Very Shy Performer.  Yes, dear friends, Yours Truly used to absolutely HATE getting up on a stage, but if I can do it, so can you!  Whether you want to sing and play at an open mic or just serenade the family dog, I'll share experiences from my long musical career that will help you have more confidence on any stage.  Don't like to sing?  You're a Nervous Nellie?  No problem -- all aspects of presenting your best performance will be covered, including how to prepare an effective setlist.  I'll also ask for your own input (anonymously of course!) when it comes to stagefright -- together we'll conquer the world!
Playing in Chord/Melody Style  (Level 3 and up)
Discover the secret of elegantly smooth, professional-sounding playing with this simple “two-step” method that gives you everything you need to know about how to streamline your left hand positioning.  (This workshop in its "newly revised" version was last offered at QDF 5.0 - 2021, and as a Walker Workshop in March 2022.)
Practice With Purpose (Levels 3 and up)
Until someone invents a magic pill that will automatically allow you to play every piece perfectly, you will need to do the work yourself!  I’ll share my 65+ years of experience as we apply tried and true practice methods to any song you want to learn.  Your new practicing skills will build both your repertoire and your confidence!  (Levels 2-5 will enjoy this workshop.)  DAD tuning
 But WAIT!  There's MORE!!!  I'm teaching 7 additional workshops on Quarantune / QDF9.0 -- Feb. 2-5, 2023 --
Click
HERE  to see that list.
Here's the nitty-gritty:
Each workshop is $15 (USD) and will run a total of 90 minutes -- 60-75 minutes of solid instruction, with plenty of time for questions and other interaction.
A minimum of 6 people would be appreciated. The maximum is 99, so no worries about getting locked out!
If your plans change and you must cancel your workshop, I'll happily offer a refund, but instead please allow me to credit your payment towards a future workshop of your choice.
Please pick the one(s) you're interested in, and the date(s), and click the Paypal button(s) to arrange for payment.  You'll quickly receive a personal "thank you" from me to confirm your registration.  (Note -- if you are ordering more than one workshop, you can place each item in your cart and then check out with everything at one time -- one-stop shopping!)
If possible, please register at least 4-5 days ahead of time.  You will receive your Zoom invitation and workshop PDFs approximately three days prior to the workshop.  But I am happy to welcome last-minute registrants and will do my best to accommodate you with Zoomvites and PDFs.
You do not need to have a Zoom account to join a meeting.
It's recommended that you join the workshop on your computer, laptop, or tablet.  A smart phone will not be suitable for these sessions.
Sessions will not be recorded.
