I was quite interested to learn about the geological history of the Isle of Man in this video, and also became aware of the very real effects of coastal erosion in modern times. This fascinating account features a detailed documentary about some residents' specific measures to protect their property from the ever-encroaching sea. A follow-up segment, filmed seven years later, compares the slow but steady reality of homes that are now very much closer to the edge of the cliff -- predictions are dire especially when global warming is factored in. |
Start your virtual journey around the Isle of Man with this short promotional trailer that includes information about the scenery, attractions, government, language, music, dance, and culture. I highly recommend you purchase the full DVD available from the ManxMusic.com.
This is a marvelous video produced by the Isle of Man Government. "Get a taste of what you can see and do on the Isle of Man in this two-day itinerary from Visit Britain. Ride the steam railway and explore the historic Castle Rushen, Laxey Wheel and Gaiety Theatre. Go horse riding or take in the scenic Calf of Man and sample some Manx kippers, queenies and local ale."
I absolutely LOVE this video!! Fantastic scenery, accompanied by a lively Manx jig, "Three Little Boats Went Out to Sea," performed by Hungarian musician, Arany Zoltán. You'll find my arrangement of this traditional Manx tune on p. 54 of Tailless Tunes 2.
A lovely and comprehensive tour of some of the most scenic areas around the Island. Gorgeous music in the background....
A very nice compilation of several different videos showing contrast from all areas of the Island. (Nice music too, but not necessarily of Manx origin....)
This is a segment of a documentary about the British isles, in which the narrator takes you through the important remains of the Neolithic and Bronze ages on the Isle of Man. The two-hour complete film, Standing with Stones, will take you all across England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and the Hebrides and Orkney Islands.

A live dance set from Ny Fennee at the Villa Marina in Douglas in August of 2011. This event was part of the International Folk Dance Festival.
Snow is rare on the Isle of Man, but an occasional blizzard can blow up quickly and turn deadly for the flocks of sheep caught out in the deep drifts. This poignant song tells of such an event that occurred in the late 17th century -- an old farmer was sick and unable to get his sheep from the pasture before they became buried in the wind-driven snow. It is said that he died soon after of a broken heart. Although various English translations of the lyrics exist, the song is always sung in Manx Gaelic.
In March of 2013, a blowing snowstorm created drifts of 20', once again burying many sheep. This YouTube shows how folks worked together to rescue the sheep.
My own arrangement of this poignant song appears on p. 49 of Tailless Tunes 2. I tried to reflect pain and anguish surely felt by many as a result of these tragedies.
